Sixteen associations of historians and educators across Japan have issued a joint statement, urging Japanese politicians and media to squarely face up to Japan's wartime atrocities, in particular subjecting women to work in Japanese military brothels.
The statement says the existence of forcibly recruited "sex slaves" has been verified by many historical records and extensive research.
It also demands the Japanese government to acknowledge the past and never repeat the mistakes.
