In today's podcast, China's media regulator says online videos will be censored like other forms of entertainment.
The top media regulator will use the same censorship policies for online video content as it does for traditional TV shows and films, said Cai Fuchao, director of the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television.
Cai made the comments at the 2nd China Internet Audio-Visual Conference, on December 16 at a three-day closed session meeting in the southwestern city of Chengdu. Websites offering streamed TV and film content need to acquire clearance from the regulator before being put online, he also said.
Cai, a former deputy editor-in-chief at the conservative Beijing Daily newspaper, said that content providers would be held accountable for oversight of online TV shows and also called on companies to produce more original content.
Cai's comments are aimed at reaffirming an order his administration made in September that required TV andmovie streaming websites to obtain license. The order goes into effect on April 1, 2015.
Some have expressed fears that the licenses could take as long as six months to get, but Cai did not comment on this.
An executive from a streaming website said the regulator has also introduced a cap on the amount of imported dramas they can offer at 30 percent of the total from the previous year.
Cai's comment comes in the wake of efforts by the regulator to crack down on online TV shows and films deemed as vulgar, in bad taste, failing to cast China in a good light, or infringing copyrights.
In November, the government ordered the closure of two websites run by volunteers, Yyets.com and Shooter.cn. They had been providing net users with Chinese-language subtitles for pirated TV shows and movies.
The founder of Sohu.com, Charles Zhang, has criticized the licensing regime, saying that regulators shouldopen the market to imported content because it helps boost the competitiveness of domestic content providers.
Regulators did a good job in the online game industry by allowing foreign companies unfettered access to the country, he said. This would allow domestic companies to stand up to international competition eventually.
A previous policy that allowed content providers to censor their own content had provided a level playing field, Zhang said.
