While football in China can trace its roots back to thousands of years ago, the modern game was brought to the country by British sailors at the end of the 19th century, and has until recent years struggled to establish a professional structure.

The Chinese Football Association(CFA), taking charge of the Chinese domestic soccer leagues and national teams, was founded in 1924. Seven years later in 1931, the CFA was affiliated to the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). The CFA is currently responsible for the implementation(实施) of and compliance with existing and new rules , regulations and statutes of the AFC and FIFA.

Its goals are to promote high quality and high level competition, introduce advanced managerial concepts to the market, encourage the influx of higher quality foreign coaches and players, and gradually establish the European system for player registrations and transfers.
