In the late summer of that year we lived in a house in a village that looked across the river and the plain to the mountains.

The plain was rich with crops;
平原上有丰饶的庄稼；
there were many orchards of fruit trees and beyond the plain the mountains were brown and bare.
有许许多多的果树园，而平原外的山峦，则是一片光秃秃的褐色。
There was fighting in the mountains and at night we could see the flashes from the artillery.
山峰间正在打仗，夜里我们看得见战炮的闪光。
